“Keep New York City Clean Put Trash In It’s Place Don’t Litter Don’t Litter Don’t Litter Don’t Litter Don’t Litter Don’t Litter Don’t Litter” is an installation of 9 handmade papers composed of litter harvested from the sidewalks of New York City. Each paper is affixed to the floor (and wall in the case of Staten Island) of the gallery in the relative location of its spot on the city map and lists the coordinates of its corresponding DSNY-managed waste facility found courtesy of the following link. By taking on the title of NYC public trash can text and listing unlabeled coordinates on strange floor-objects, my hope is to inspire curiosity in the viewer about the origins of such materials, how they come to exist in our community, and if they should pull out their smart device equipped with Google Maps to learn where these objects should have journeyed to had they not been turned into art on the floor of a Bushwick gallery.
