“Lila of Cleveland” is the first in a series of portraits depicting transgender Americans who have left their conservative home states in search of a better life. In line with certain censorship practices formerly used for scandalous works in art exhibition spaces, each piece is obscured with a curtain in the form of their home state’s flag.
Viewers are encouraged to interact with the curtain.
